Oops… I did it again!

October 13, 2009

Though I’d promised myself not to, I’ve ignored this blog for a really long time……. again. This isn’t the first time I’ve done this, as my readers know all too well. I don’t want to let this blog of mine go to waste, as I’ve put in considerable effort writing stuff. So I promise, I won’t let this blog lie dormant, at least for quite a while. So what kept me from posting all this while? School, exams, the usual stuff. But quite a few changes have taken place in my life.

For one, my age old 6600GT conked out, so I’m stuck for now with an even older ATI Rage card. So as you might have guessed, gaming is no longer a hobby of mine. The only game I play now is Battle for Wesnoth, a classic turn-based strategy game. I’m not much of a fan of the RTS genre, mostly because of games with an overwhelming number of options, and the complications that come with them. Battle for Wesnoth though, keeps it relatively simple, and is great fun playing in multiplayer. Besides this, I’ve taken to watching movies now, and I realize how much fun it can be. :)

Secondly, I’ve ditched Linux Mint, and took the plunge and installed Arch Linux. I use Arch full-time now, and I’m really pleased. The installation part was the most fun. Arch Linux is definitely recommended for anyone who’s interested in doing some classic text-mode installation, and knows his way around the terminal. I’ve also been eyeing Sabayon and Mandriva for quite a while, I guess I’ll try them out soon.

And I’m enjoying my vacations right now. ;)

Pesky Pals

June 27, 2009

“Arrgh, please get outta my house!!”, I thought to myself, as I watched a friend of mine sitting in front of my computer, abusing my poor keyboard, sitting in the same leisurely posture as he had been for the past 3 hours.

It all began when this so called “friend” of mine came knocking at my door, asking if he could use my PC to access the internet and collect some information for his Geography assignment. “Ahh, I need to help the poor lad” I thought to myself and kindly let him in. He settled himself on a chair in front of my PC. Something about the way he sat on the chair told me that he didn’t intend to leave anytime soon. I was hoping I was wrong.

But alas, I wasn’t. As he sat there, hammering/assaulting my keyboard, I took a futile glance at the clock which hung on the wall every 5 minutes or so, hoping he would leave. Apparently, collecting information for his assignment wasn’t the only reason for his coming to my house. After his first 30 minutes of using my PC, he asked me if he could play any games. Like I had any other option but to say “yes”. He unleashed himself on my keyboard, hitting it harder than ever before. Everytime he hit one of the keys hard, a single hair fell off my head. Thank god, I’ve a good number of hairs on my head, else I’d be bald by now. Thankfully, after about another three hours of torture for both me and my PC, he got up his arse, and just when I began celebrating, he asked to use the bathroom. After a few minutes, he was back, and resumed from where he’d left at.

At this point, I wanted to kill him, but then, that would land me in jail, so I considered my other options.

–Shoot him in his dick. But no, that would probably kill him.
–Whack him right across his face….. And risk getting his filthy saliva on my fist? Hell no!
–Try to make him understand it was time to leave. But no, some people have such hard heads, if you threw a coconut at them, the coconuts would groan with pain, or maybe even shatter to a million pieces.

That was when a light bulb illuminated above my head. Idea!

I accessed the main electrical switch inside the house, turned it off, and voila! No electricity! I explained to my friend that it was probably a power cut, and he decided I was right. He got his big fat arse out of my house, and I was as happy as ever! I am a genius, even if I have to say so myself. :D
Nice idea, eh?

It’s true! An idea can change your life!

P.S> A special thanks to:
–My friend, without whom this blog post would be non-existent.
–Idea Cellular, whose slogan I’ve used here.
–Anyone who’s reading this.

And, that’s all folks! :)

24 hours? I could’ve used more!

June 4, 2009

This blog hasn’t seen too many posts mainly because I, the author, am either too lazy or too busy to post. I’d been lazy to post while I had time, and now I don’t get too much time because of school and all. I set out to school at eight in the morning, and return home at about a quarter past five in the evening. So after spending most of my day at school, once I’m back home, I’m rearing to kick off my shoes and pwn some noobs in Urban Terror. Quite often, I’m satisfied with my kills/headshots, and then return to do some study/schoolwork. Of course, I have some little snacks in between, and also browse a few web sites. And before I know it, I have to go have dinner, and call it a day. I need at least 7 hours of sleep if I am to keep awake at school, so I have to go to bed pretty early. It’s a crime really, we have just 24 hours in a day. I could’ve used a few more. :(

Become a PES 2009 legend…

May 20, 2009

…as a manager, not as a player :)

The new PES 2009 Become a Legend mode didn’t turn out to be as great as I fancied it to be. So, I’m back to the ‘ol Master League. I’ve played more than 250 hours of this game, so rest assured, I know what I’m talking about here. :)

You could always manage a big name club like ManYoo or Chelsea or the rest of the lot, but eventually, it does get very easy, unless you really suck at the game. You should be a braveheart, and take control of some of the lesser clubs like Fulham, Everton and the likes. Oh, and by the way, it’s no big deal managing the lesser clubs if the difficulty levels are low. Crank up the difficulty levels to the maximum, and then you’ll have a truly challenging experience.

When you’re managing a smaller club, at high difficulty levels, there are a lot of problems you have to face. For one, players tire too easily, so you can’t play your best 11 in every game. Your club’s popularity will most likely be low, so you won’t be able to buy well known players. You’ll start off with 15000 P, no matter which club you choose, so you can’t spend a lot. You’ll have to earn your own money.

If you want to make any progress with the team you’ve chosen, then you’ll need to use real-world managerial tactics to succeed. Plus of course, you could use some of the tips I’m about to mention. ;)

Rotate your squad
This one’s simple isn’t it? You don’t need your best players to play every game. For example, I manage Blackburn, and Diouf is my best player. Now I don’t need him playing against say, Hull city. So I could use another striker in his place, or I could substitute him mid-way. Whatever I do, I need to make sure he’s available for the important games. While rotating, it’s important to get the balance right. It’s pointless to play your best 11 in one game and your worst 11 in the next. Mix your players. Make sure that you have some good players playing in every game.

Change your team’s tactics
That’s right, use an attacking 4-3-3 formation if you have to. Once your team are ahead of the opposition, you can settle for a more defensive formation- in true Jose Mourinho style. You can tell your team to play attack-minded or defensively. Access the formation settings, go to Simple Settings and you can change the mentality of your team. Change it depending on the situation. Your common sense can help you make the right choice. You could also make a few tactical changes to your formation here. Also go to Set Tactics. Here, you can change the way your backline defends.

Use the transfer window!
Yup, it’s that time of the season when rumours are flying high, and the Man City scum start dreaming- the transfer window! Jokes apart, the transfer window is a great time for you to strengthen your squad. By strengthen I don’t mean- “buy every player you can think of”. You won’t be able to do that anyway if you’re playing at the highest settings. No sir, you’ll have to buy youth or loan players. I’ll come up with a list of potential players sometime. Sometimes you can find great players with no contracts. Search for them. Go to Negotiations>Search>By Group>No Belonging. Signing players with no contracts is pretty easy. Of course, not all players will sign for your club, not if you’re club isn’t successful enough. You could also have a look at the Newcomers list for a list of newcomers (duh!). In the mid-season transfer window, you can loan players until the end of the season, and this is really useful. Even players like Robinho and Lionel Messi will join your club on loan, if you provide enough cash (points). While negotiating with other clubs for players, you can go for player+cash deals to save your money(points). You can also add players to your scout list to receive reports on them.

That’s it for now. I’ll come up with some more tips if I remember any, and like I said before, I’ll cook up a list of potential players *sometime*.

My new Kodak Easyshare C913

May 20, 2009

Kodak Easyshare C913

My brother from Kolkata was kind enough to send me a brand new Kodak Easyshare C913 via courier, and I got my hands on it this afternoon. The courier guy turned out to be a muppet- he couldn’t find my house despite the fact that it stands right by the side of the main road. So I myself had to (horror of horrors!) go out in the hot sun to get the camera. After taking a few sample shots with the camera, I’ve started to like it.

The camera is a 9.2 MP camera which boasts of 3x optical zoom. The picture quality is good, and the auto settings work well. Videos can be captured at 640×480 @ 15 FPS or 320×240 @ 30 FPS, and the quality is decent enough. Despite being a point-and-shoot camera, some settings can be fairly tweaked.

The camera is really compact, so it’s very portable. Build quality is satisfactory, but the battery cover feels flimsy. The camera is very easy to use, thanks to the simple user interface and the user manual provided.

The blur reduction feature is present, which is good for shaky hands like mine. The camera also has pictbridge support, but I won’t be needing it anyway since I don’t have a printer. Features like auto focus and red-eye reduction are available as well. File transfer can be done via USB. The internal storage size is pathetic, so I plan on buying a memory card. The detailed specifications can be viewed here

Overall it’s a decent camera and worth buying for a casual photographer. As for me, I’m off to take a few shots. :)

Urban Terror

May 14, 2009

Urban Terror is a free, fast paced multiplayer FPS game which started out as a mod for Quake III. Popularly called UrT, this game is focused on fun, addictive gameplay with bits of reality thrown in. There are a variety of weapons to choose from, and all of them closely resemble their real life counterparts. There are plenty of maps to play on, and more can be downloaded, so you should never get bored. There are plenty of different game modes like team deathmatch, bomb mode, team survivor, capture the flag, free for all etc. This game can be played over a LAN or on the internet. Anybody who has played this game with more than 4 players can testify to its addictiveness! You can run this game on Windows, Mac, or Linux.

You can find lots of download links on this page. The .zip version works on all OSes, while the .exe version works only on Windows OSes.

Screenshots can be viewed here.

All new UrT gamers are requested to read the Urban Terror Manual and the FAQ. These will clear a lot of your doubts.

My trigger-happy fingers are itching for some action, so I’ll be off now. Maybe I’ll see you next time I play. :)

Hello world!

May 12, 2009

I got my new blog up and running this pleasant afternoon; I thought I’d make my first post on this blog. Some of you reading this might be knowing me already. I’m Cool Joe from the Thinkdigit Forum. So, hello world! I hope I don’t lose interest in this blog anytime soon, like with my previous blog ;)

Now you might be wondering why I’ve named my blog like this or you might even be wondering why I’ve named myself this way. I’m interested in football, and my favourite player is Joe Cole. I also like Cool Joe and that’s why I chose this name ;)

By the way, I hope any of you reading this won’t be put off by the theme. I like it for it’s simplicity, and that’s why I’m using it here. :)

Well, that concludes my first post on this blog. Not quite a grand opening, but this will have to do. :)
