…as a manager, not as a player
The new PES 2009 Become a Legend mode didn’t turn out to be as great as I fancied it to be. So, I’m back to the ‘ol Master League. I’ve played more than 250 hours of this game, so rest assured, I know what I’m talking about here.
You could always manage a big name club like ManYoo or Chelsea or the rest of the lot, but eventually, it does get very easy, unless you really suck at the game. You should be a braveheart, and take control of some of the lesser clubs like Fulham, Everton and the likes. Oh, and by the way, it’s no big deal managing the lesser clubs if the difficulty levels are low. Crank up the difficulty levels to the maximum, and then you’ll have a truly challenging experience.
When you’re managing a smaller club, at high difficulty levels, there are a lot of problems you have to face. For one, players tire too easily, so you can’t play your best 11 in every game. Your club’s popularity will most likely be low, so you won’t be able to buy well known players. You’ll start off with 15000 P, no matter which club you choose, so you can’t spend a lot. You’ll have to earn your own money.
If you want to make any progress with the team you’ve chosen, then you’ll need to use real-world managerial tactics to succeed. Plus of course, you could use some of the tips I’m about to mention.
Rotate your squad
This one’s simple isn’t it? You don’t need your best players to play every game. For example, I manage Blackburn, and Diouf is my best player. Now I don’t need him playing against say, Hull city. So I could use another striker in his place, or I could substitute him mid-way. Whatever I do, I need to make sure he’s available for the important games. While rotating, it’s important to get the balance right. It’s pointless to play your best 11 in one game and your worst 11 in the next. Mix your players. Make sure that you have some good players playing in every game.
Change your team’s tactics
That’s right, use an attacking 4-3-3 formation if you have to. Once your team are ahead of the opposition, you can settle for a more defensive formation- in true Jose Mourinho style. You can tell your team to play attack-minded or defensively. Access the formation settings, go to Simple Settings and you can change the mentality of your team. Change it depending on the situation. Your common sense can help you make the right choice. You could also make a few tactical changes to your formation here. Also go to Set Tactics. Here, you can change the way your backline defends.
Use the transfer window!
Yup, it’s that time of the season when rumours are flying high, and the Man City scum start dreaming- the transfer window! Jokes apart, the transfer window is a great time for you to strengthen your squad. By strengthen I don’t mean- “buy every player you can think of”. You won’t be able to do that anyway if you’re playing at the highest settings. No sir, you’ll have to buy youth or loan players. I’ll come up with a list of potential players sometime. Sometimes you can find great players with no contracts. Search for them. Go to Negotiations>Search>By Group>No Belonging. Signing players with no contracts is pretty easy. Of course, not all players will sign for your club, not if you’re club isn’t successful enough. You could also have a look at the Newcomers list for a list of newcomers (duh!). In the mid-season transfer window, you can loan players until the end of the season, and this is really useful. Even players like Robinho and Lionel Messi will join your club on loan, if you provide enough cash (points). While negotiating with other clubs for players, you can go for player+cash deals to save your money(points). You can also add players to your scout list to receive reports on them.
That’s it for now. I’ll come up with some more tips if I remember any, and like I said before, I’ll cook up a list of potential players *sometime*.
